How to build an ear stack you still like in a year
SHY
A strong ear stack rarely starts with filling every available space. It usually starts with one or two decisions that make the next ones easier.
At SHY, ear curation is anatomy-led. We start with the ear in front of us and use reference images for direction.
Start with your anatomy
Ears vary. The fold of a helix, depth of a conch, shape of a tragus and available space on a lobe all affect which piercings are possible and where jewellery will sit well.
A reference image is useful for mood and direction; your own ear decides what translates. A piercer should be able to explain which placements suit your anatomy.
Think beyond the next piercing
Ear Curation gives you a chance to think about balance, spacing, your existing jewellery and anything you may want to add later.
Asymmetry, different jewellery between ears and open space can all make a stack feel balanced.
Sometimes the strongest move is leaving space around a piece you love.
Choose a hero piece
If you are buying fine jewellery, start with the piece you are most excited about. That might be a small 14k gold motif, a stone, a shape or a texture. Then let simpler pieces support it.
This is also a useful way to manage budget. Let one or two special pieces do the work, with simpler pieces around them.
Mixing metals is allowed
Yellow gold, white gold and implant-grade titanium can sit together beautifully. A mixed-metal ear often looks relaxed and personal.
If you want the stack to feel coherent, repeat something else: shape, scale, texture or stone colour.
Plan around healing
A new piercing needs time. Healing varies by placement and by person, and adding too many fresh piercings at once can make aftercare harder.
Our Ear Curation appointment can include up to three piercings. Sarah will talk through what is realistic for your anatomy, lifestyle and current piercings before deciding how many to do at once.
Fresh piercings also begin with jewellery that allows for swelling. A downsize is commonly needed once initial swelling has settled, often around the six-week point when advised by your piercer. Wait for your piercer’s advice before changing jewellery so the piercing has time to settle.
Quality matters
For fresh piercings, jewellery is chosen separately. Internally threaded implant-grade titanium starts at £25, and solid 14k gold starts at £70. The right piece suits the placement, fits correctly and has a secure construction that supports healing.
Let the stack evolve
An ear stack can build over time. You may start with lobes and add a helix months later, replace a plain end with gold once a piercing is settled, or decide you like more open space than you expected.
That is the useful part of Ear Curation. It gives you direction while leaving room for the ear to evolve.
